Malawian court rules against Shepherd and Mary Bushiri’s arrest.
Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court ruled against the arrest of Bushiri and his wife. The state made a request for an arrest warrant to take them into custody but it was denied on Wednesday this week.
The court has said that the couple will not be arrested before they appear in court by a summon.
According to reports, the magistrate’s decision was based on the fact that the couple will need to appear in court after being summoned, as per the initial ruling which was made by the court last year.
The controversial church leaders received bail last year and fled South Africa. The two fled to their home country a day after their bail was ruled by Pretoria court. They explained on facebook that they fled because they feared for their lives and they did not care about their assets that were being held by the state. The pair were arrested on charges of theft, money laundering, and fraud amounting to over $7 million late last year.
The name Bushiri has become associated with many scandals therefore they have ceased being famous in SA reports IOL.
A vehicle owned by the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church was seen at the Zimbabwean border reported by Briefly.co.za making Bushiri the talk of the town once more.
A 35-year-old suspect is set to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court after being arrested at the Beitbridge border. The arrest was made by the Hawks division, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s (DPCI) Serious Organised Crime Investigation.
A statement revealed that the body showed that a transporter had been stopped who had a total number of six passengers. When the vehicle was checked they found out that it indeed belonged to the church founded by Bushiri. The statement read that the occupants said that they were on the way to a conference in Malawi.
